Happy Paws Plattsmouth FAQ: Everything You Need to Know

Foster Program

Q: What is a foster-based rescue?
A: Unlike traditional shelters, Happy Paws Plattsmouth places all animals in temporary foster homes until they find permanent families. This gives each pet the chance to live in a real home environment, receive personalized attention, and learn family skills that make their transition to forever homes smoother.

Q: Why don’t you have a physical shelter?
A:Our foster-based model allows animals to receive individualized care and attention they wouldn’t get in a shelter environment. Living with families helps us better understand each animal’s personality, needs, and the type of home where they’ll thrive long-term.

Q: What do I need to become a foster?
A: To become a foster, you need to:

  • Be at least 19 years old
  • Provide a safe, separate space for your foster animal to decompress
  • Offer love, guidance, and basic training
  • Share photos/videos to help your foster find their forever home
  • Transport to occasional vet appointments and adoption events
  • Complete our application and home visit

Q: What does Happy Paws Plattsmouth provide for foster families?
A: We provide everything your foster pet needs:

  • All medical care (vaccines, microchip, spay/neuter, vet visits)
  • Food and toys
  • Crate/kennel if needed
  • Blankets and bedding
  • Collar and leash
  • Puppy training pads (when available)
  • Ongoing support and guidance

Q: Can I foster if I have other pets or children?
A: Absolutely! Most of our foster families have resident pets and/or children. We’ll work with you to find a foster animal that fits well with your current household.

Q: What if I fall in love with my foster pet?
A: It happens all the time! Foster families have first right of adoption for any animal in their care.

Q: What training and support do foster homes receive?
A: As a foster home, you’re never on your own. We provide:

  • Comprehensive education and training on animal care
  • One-on-one coaching throughout your fostering journey
  • 24/7 support from experienced volunteers
  • All supplies and veterinary care

Think of fostering as “test driving” different pets until you find the perfect match for your home and lifestyle. Many of our foster families discover their perfect companion through fostering. It’s a wonderful way to ensure compatibility before making a lifetime commitment.

Q: How long does fostering typically last?
A: Fostering periods vary based on each animal’s needs and adoption timeline. Some pets find their forever homes within weeks, while others may need a few months of care. We work closely with you to find arrangements that fit your schedule and availability. The most important thing is providing a stable, loving environment during their transition period.
